The New York Continuo Collective will offer a three class course on ornamentation of the early Baroque to be taught by Paul Shipper. While designed primarily for vocalists, the course is open to interested instrumentalists, as well.
The class will concentrate on three elements:
1. How to build a vocabulary of useful, stylistic ornaments
2. The musical, textual and emotional function of ornamentation
3. Proper technique to establish speed, accuracy, timing and color
Primary sources will include Caccini, Monteverdi, Rognoni, Bassani and other masters of the florid style both instrumental and vocal. Materials will be provided.
If there is strong interest from the class, we will examine high baroque style in the last session.
The course will begin on Tuesday, February 7, 2012, and will meet for three successive weeks. The classes will be held at St. Luke's Lutheran Church, 308 West 46th Street (between 8th and 9th Avenues), from 7:00-8:30 PM in the 2nd floor lounge.
The cost of the course is $75, with scholarship available for any who can not afford the tuition, The $75 will be pro-rated into the Spring tuition for those who participate in the entire semester.
