New York Continuo Collective Spring 2020 Project
The Lament in the Renaissance and Early Baroque
A survey of the lament and related forms, with some examples from the late Medieval period, its manifestation in Renaissance literature and music, and its development as a genre in seventeenth-century opera.
Singers will be assigned pieces to study and rehearse in class, accompanied by the instrumentalists of the continuo band, incorporating elements of historical performance practice such as ornamentation and dramatic gesture. Most of the pieces will be solo songs, but some choruses and other ensemble pieces will also be explored.
The workshop begins Tuesday, January 28, 2020.
